After the success of “Wood You Believe?”, the installation – designed with CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota presented at the Salone del Mobile 2023 – which aimed to show the huge amount of waste produced by the furniture industry
and the entire process of processing post-consumer wood. This year’s goal is to demonstrate the versatility, stability and properties of regenerated wood thanks to advanced technology and the quality of Made in Italy design and production.
This year’s installation, also designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, is inspired by an iconic form of international design: the “Artichokes”lamp by Louis Poulsen. Designed in
1958 for the innovative Copenhagen restaurant “Langelinie Pavillonen” by Poul Henningsen, Artichocke is an example of design that transcends space and time.
Each “petal” of this stand is made of Ecological Panel® and helps to draw a shape based on the interlocking system. The more than 100 panels involved (54 horizontals to recall the shape of the petals, other 60 rectangles) act as concentric pillars each becoming a structural element that helps to keep the entire stand in balance, showing in turn the facets of a selection of the Saviola catalogue.
The “petals” are double-sided: if on the outside they have a solid colour finish, on the inside they have a melamine finish inspired by metals, stones and woods. Therefore, it is precisely inside that manifests the varied expression of the Saviola world: a place without dazzle that welcomes the human dimension, with a relaxed atmosphere that enhances the senses of sight and touch.
Each panel is potentially ready to be used in any type of architectural project. From the design of furniture and kitchens, to the coating of vertical surfaces with the possibility of choosing fireproof and water-repellent supports.
The experience inside the installation was even more enveloping for the viewer thanks to the large luminous bulb that revealed the textures and colors of the Collection on display to be touched.
What were the visitors’ reactions?
Appreciation for the project dictated by wonder, interpretation of an icon, functionality of the work and high distinctive feature. 130 years after the birth of Poul Henningsen, The
artichocke Saviola in Ecological Panel® enhances the transformative power of regenerated materials and connects light structures, shadows, glows, reinterpreting a classic design in a green key.
